BIOGRAPHY
Sam has ridden all of his life from the age of 4, and gave his first commercial lesson when he was about 10 years old!
His parents, Bob and Freda Humphrey, started Bunny Hill Riding School in 1955, later to become the School of National Equitation.
From an early age, Sam schooled a variety of ponies bought by his father, and schooled them on for resale. this was a tough education in riding as his father was a equally tough task master of the "old school".
As a child, Sam hunted with the Quorn and was a member of the Quorn Pony Club. He was a member of their Prince Philip Cup team for several years.
In his early teens, he Showjumped a large string of ponies for Stan Mellor snr., up to county level, often competing up to 7 ponies a day and sometimes pulling in 2 different shows on each day.
He continued Show jumping horses until his late teens when he took up Point-to-Pointing, training and riding his own horses and also friends' horses, with many successes. In his 2nd. year of racing, he progressed to National Hunterchases. One of his most memorable days was riding and being placed at Cheltenham.
Early in his pointing career, the sport of Teamchasing was invented and Sam soon became a regular on the Teamchase circuit as well - Point-to-Pointing Saturdays and Teamchasing Sundays! Over the years, Sam qualified and rode at the National Championships many times and trained many newcomers to the sport, nurturing them from fun and novice events, to opens and the championships.
Sam's other passion in life has been History, and in 1970, he was able to combine Equestrianism and History when, along with his father, they were instrumental in reviving the ancient sport of Jousting. He formed and trained a Jousting Team that has toured the world as The Nottingham Jousting Assoc. giving displays and also as the British Jousting Team, they have gone on to successfully compete against the National teams of France, USA and Canada. The jousting also led Sam into film and television where he trained horses and actors for specific parts. He has successfully trained people to take the riding section of the Equity Stunt Register exam.
Since the retirement of his father,he has dedicated himself to teaching Main Stream riding as Chief Instructor at Bunny Hill. Although his speciallity is teaching jumping, he has a wide knowledge of many varied disciplines having worked and ridden in many different countries around the world. Consequently he always has an open mind to anything to do with riding and handling horses.
Sam continues to hunt reguarly both in England and Ireland, Since 2007 he has been a Field Master of the Atherstone Hunt. until 2009
Sam's wife Louise also teaches she is a Britsh Dessage Judge and an N.V.Q. Assessor.
